If it's a hardware problem (as opposed to driver issues or conflict with other RECENTLY installed programs):
A. Sounds like your notebook's CCFL (backlight) inverter may be on it's way out (capacitors usually) or the associated IDC (Inverter Display Cable ) flat cable loose/cracked (from open/close cycles or a drop). When it goes out... if you study the black screen closely, you might still be able to see the actual screen info/presentation.
B. Occasionally, it can be a RAM, power supply, keyboard assembly or motherboard issue (usually from drops).
If you can hook an external desktop monitor to it, you might can determine whether it's A or B. Disconnect any other unnecessary USB devices, etc. If B, you might try removing a RAM module then swapping one module for the other, for example.
