In the search for the nature of man, it seems the first steps follow the path of selflessness.
Being willing to immediately forgive the shortcomings and flaws of others. Without passing judgment or prejudice.
It can be cruel to our sense of justice or what is fair, giving this kind of blank check to humanity. Turning the other cheek.
I see myself being the greatest wall preventing my evolution. My overactive, incensed dedication to a justified world.
The arch nemesis of self entitlement.
So quick to embark a self righteous juggernaut, thus engendering the exact same self entitlement I rail against.

Comment by christine-quintessential on November 28, 2011 at 1:58pm too black and white IMHO
the person who said turn the other cheek (Jesus) did plenty of standing up for justice stuff, such as overturning the money tables in the temple, purposely talking to and helping society's 'rejects', kindly correcting the prostitute's and greedy tax collector's ways of life, and defiantly putting the scribes and pharisees right with their pious nonsense.
Selflessness just means forgetting our selfish needs, and putting our energy into something more constructive.
Comment by Shawny L Blumenfeld on November 29, 2011 at 2:46am I re-read and thought "judgement"
war. all wars in the beginning was not religion it was judgement . judgement of the prostitute and the thief and the land holders or men who held more land and women vs those who did not . those were the wars and the anger . They judged on who had what and their appreciation or mockery of their own. we became "selfish" imo when we became more aware of being more humane and in this connundrume we had wars on our shoulders , hate ,anger ,judgement towards our friends and neighbors and families and we had to own to our own judge of us to ourselves. suddenly we became our own "gods" our own keepers and the voice we had inside we placed outside and said it belonged to another and took a way our own voice . The judge and fairness became separate and compassion left human kind when we took our selves and made it ok to replace each other . we believe we can always replace friendships easy , children easy , loves easy and our communities easily and we find out that we have replaced ourselves . The judgement as I see it is not in the end our own it is our losses.
