Let's Settle This on the Dance Floor, Shall We?

My utter awesomeness does indeed translate well into dance.  I think we've all seen that.  Now I must call upon all the real men and women of VH to lay down your bickering and come join me. As BM has said,

How Do You Reward or Spotlight Your Admins?

(This was the subject of a blog posted yesterday by Eric Suesz on Creators Network)

But of course we have our own special way of doing it here on VH, and I have myself to blame.

I started it, as near as I can figure.

Back in the days when Tom and Paul were the effective admins, many of us had moments of expressing displeasure.  So I'm…

Converting Longer Videos for Ning Compatibility

With better cameras creating larger and larger video files these days, it is indeed an odd and discomfiting throwback to have to labor under the 100mb upload restriction by Ning.  But you can post videos to VH that are 15, 20, even 25 minutes or more.  The key is video conversion.

Whether you are using an Apple, a Windows PC, or a Linux build, converting your videos to the natively compatible FLV format (flash video format) and…

odd thoughts after whiskey and soda

The arguments which seem so cutting--the hatreds which seem so permanent--yet we're family.  Odd, quirky, dysfunctional, moody, artistic, inept, brilliant, bizarre, schizoid, genius, boring, blathering, enlightening, preaching, squabbling, jumbling, misinterpreting, nailing, hailing, failing, family.

I remember an old story I heard about David Bowie finally meeting the Beatles. He clammed-up.  He retreated within.  He had so much respect for them, that maybe he felt…

McGrawtim, guitar player!

Times have been rough for our friend Tim since another important CIA mission has called him away from VH. This time, while being stranded in Costa Rica for lack of sufficient funds, he has had to resort to playing in various nudie bars and disgusting cumshack slop dives, just to earn a fistful of pesos and a burrito of questionable content.

Here now, from our secret command center, I present to you the song and story stylings of our old friend...you know him you love him you can't… Continue

Pardus: Thank You Positive Logic

A while back, as I was starting what would become several months work of experimentation with different versions of Linux, PositiveLogic recommended a version called Pardus, which by default uses the KDE interface.

Wait...don't run away!  I know there are some stupid-ass technical terms here, and Linux may be like an odd narwhal in the closet to you, but there really is (so far) a beautiful raibow to be found within this blog...if you can bear words like "Gnome"…

A word on YT embeds and copyright

In the past we've seen instances of the oft-repeated phrase "embeds are okay in the blog section".  This applied especially if the embed was not yours.  The reason for this is that you are not posting it as your own video this way.

Let's take a look at claims that actual copyright law is broken if somebody pastes the embed code for a YT video.

In the strictest legal sense, you are not copying a video, but a string of HTML code.

A embed code…

10 Sites Challenge

As at least one of you knows, I have thousands of bookmarks on my web browsers.  And many of them I've totally forgotten about.  So I thought it might be fun to skim over them now, and pick ten random and interesting ones.

If you've got alot of bookmarks, I challenge you to do the same, and post 10 interesting ones in a blog or vlog.

Here's my 10:

Spotify free music service available to US listeners

I read an article today which reminded me I haven't been listening to enough music.  It's not that there are no artists or albums I'm interested in, but it's more like a question of what do I have to do or pay, or what do I have to install, to get them?

Spotify is a free music service that does something alot of others don't: instead of wading through pre-selected playlists, you can search for whatever song or artists you want, and just start playing the music, for…

addressing the blog accusations by Lima

Lima writes in her blog, "But it seems because shawny decided to delete comments giving her a hard time about her griping and issues, she then had her comments deleted on other content as some type of what? a lesson?"

I have not deleted any content by Shawny.

Lima continues, "she should not be badgered for it from Frank or anybody else for that matter."

I did comment on a recent blog of hers.

The long comment of mine which…

Paid Vlogging with Fiverr

No, this is not you getting paid to vlog; this is the concept of paying people five bucks a shot to make any kind of video you want.

Talent from the site fiverr.com has already been used in months past here on VH, by me, to make the videos VloggerHeads back in May and Zummer Roll Kall! back in June.  The guy…

putting the VH chat box on your home page

I came across a nifty little code on Creators Network for putting the chat box on the main page into your home page.  All you need is a space to put the HTML code (by default home pages will have a box for this) and you're rockin'.

I've tested it on my home page and the chat box is there.

Now, as far as what use this has, I'd say it's only for convenience.  A…

Scroll Bar activity feed

Thanks to Lima for offering a few custom CSS codes for working with the activity feed!

I've also seen comments about how folks don't like the way it runs down the page (when it includes the extra info) and also how we've had to limit the latest activity from 20 down to 12, just so it wouldn't run alone on the right hand side down an essentially empty page.  I thought maybe a scroll bar would be a neat and handy thing to have, so we can still go back to the full 20…

New Activity Feed Options

Well, Ning rolled out its new Activity Feed format for all networks today, as I had mentioned in the Admin Blog this month and last.

As of yet I see no way to revert back to the old activity feed, and I get the feeling this is the new format for all Ning networks (maybe they are trying to justify an upcoming price hike).  …

how to customize a Linux install with Suse Studio

Just today, I came across an eBay Buy It Now auction that I had to get...the deal was just great.  It's a Dell Optiplex with a dual core 64 bit cpu, 2gb ram, a 320gb hd, and DVD/RW drive...for thirty-eight bucks, plus 22 shipping from WA state.  It'll make a good upgrade to my wife's rarely-used office computer.

However, it does not come with an operating system.

I have 32-bit install discs for WinXP...but I want to install a 64-bit OS, and I'd rather…
