The windows were wide open and a tepid breeze was wandering through my first floor apartment. Mid-August, ten o’clock in the evening and the night was still quite warm but I saw no sense in turning on the air conditioner. As I was also painting in the middle room, ventilation was needed to dilute the pungent smell of turpentine and linseed oil that annoyed my neighbors on those colder days when the windows…

The phone rang.
“Ron, this is Tony from the agency, tomorrow, 8am at ---. Jeans, teeshirt, bring lunch.”
“What is it?”
“Two weeks, moving a warehouse full of clothes, lotta packing.”
“Pay?”
“$7.27 an hour.”
“Heavy lifting?”
“Does it matter?”
“No, I’ll be there.”
“Good, see the foreman for your sheet, sign in.”
“Okay.”
