Congratulations on becoming a grandfather, Ken! You're a pretty cool grandpa. And congratulations, Victoria. Not as good as a grandkid, but pretty damn good, eh?
yesterday
I've received this "History of the World" a few times as an email. Richard Lederer claimed that these lines were actually culled from student papers, but I don't buy it. Many of them seem too deliberately crafted to have arisen out of ignorance. But…

What a beautiful video. Peri did a wonderful job shooting and editing this, and I loved the various interviews. This is a great promo for greyhound adoption. It made me a little misty to think about all these people coming together in the common cau…

You always say it like it is! "My first love is being an actress." It's quite a stage, isn't it? Where you can be a character and/or your true self. And it's up to the rest of us to figure it out.

@ Tahllulah: Speechless? When I heard my words and then yours read out loud by Ken, I found myself a little teary.

Although Don LaFontaine might roll over in his grave to hear me say this, nice voiceover work, Pres! It's a promo ad/movie trailer in one.

Your music choices are always so dead-on, Syd, and well synchronized too with these myriad clips. If I'd never seen a Tom vid before, I would be curious to after seeing this.

P.S. Cloakroomattendant and I often try to convince Tahllulah that she is a writer. The eloquence of that concise, self-contained essay in a paragraph: just more evidence.

Nicely done, Ken. Jay1p definitely deserved recognition for such wryness. I suppose it's all to easy to pick the laugh-out-loud zingers for the weekly Comm-E because there are so many witty people here at VH, but there are many profound things that…

Very, very sweet. You have a lovely voice, Victoria. And this is a wonderful clip you chose.

@ Syd: Contact is one of my three favorite films of all time. And now that you mention it, that movie must be where these digital drug pushers got the idea: "two-toned audio files." Remember? That signal from space had the main audio file, and then…

You got an easy one, Loathlydaddy! Syd's probably the best promo there is for vlogging. She's the queen, IMO. (You done good.)

Yes, "hypnotic" is the key factor, I believe. But euphoric, not really. When I was in my early twenties, I used to lay on my floor late at night with the Koss headphones on and listen to Music From The Hearts Of Space on my FM station in the dark.…

Hmmm, I'll be right back to comment--first I'm gonna go find out where I can download an I-dose or two. But I think we'll not see nothing like the Mighty Quinn.
July 17
Okay, just so ya know, I'm on to all your subliminal messages in this, dude.
July 17
Did he say 8 X 12 feet?! That's amazing. Yikes, a coffin is only 3 X 6.

The Critic In Me is the Lump in My Throat

“I can’t explain or defend the criteria I use for grading student art,” one of my art professors confided to me once over coffee. “One student does something that’s technically proficient, another one has no natural ability but struggles very hard. Another one knows how to tap into trendiness… All I know for sure is that some works move a great many people, and other works move very few. If a work seems to move people, I use that as an indicator of quality.”

I do too, even though I know that ya… Continue

Graduation Day

Today is the day that the campus I work at will be billowing with caps and gowns. I feel a compulsion to greet every student wearing a gown with heartfelt congratulations, even though most of them are self-absorbed on this day and don't even make eye contact. Their parents follow them around toting floral arrangements that probably cost what I spend on groceries in a month. I love this day, because I love my job as an academic advisor and seeing those gowns makes me feel like what I do counts to… Continue

Update on Gemma

As an update to the blog and video I posted on March 4, I want to share some good news about Gemma, the German shepherd I’ve been working to find a home for.

A dog trainer in Marin County (just north of San Francisco) saw the video of Gemma and has volunteered to provide her with a foster home until she finds a permanent home. The trainer has several acres of property and four large dogs. She feels confident that she can socialize Gemma to other dogs and Gemma will receive some great training a… Continue

You Can't Put A Good Dog Down

I cursed the man in the parking lot from behind my steering wheel, the one who opened his car door, emptied his trash onto the ground, and then kicked it under his car to hide what he’d done. It’s difficult for me not to extend my contempt to the whole of our species when I see a single one of us taking a shit on the world.

I’m in a foul mood a lot these days. Most of my spare time is split between two volunteer activities: monitoring a Cooper’s hawk nest for a research project, and walking and… Continue

The Collie of Dardanelle

[I apologize to those who have read this blog previously on another site. I will most likely be posting some blogs soon that have to do with the new work I am doing with dogs, and I realized that some of them will bear direct relationship to this one. And yes, there will be more about Tiger later.]

“There will be some days when you leave this place in tears,” said John, the trainer at my dog-walking orientation when I decided at the beginning of this year to volunteer at my local… Continue
